Magic Research 2 review

Despite what the title may suggest, let’s get what you actually do in the game out of the way:

The main mechanic is you fighting monsters. There are various mechanics which will help you get better at fighting monsters. Then you defeat the final big bad boss and win the game.

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the gameplay is solid, and I can say that I had fun throughout the entire experience.

Get this game if: • you want an incremental RPG to sink your teeth into for 2 weeks (the game can be finished and that’s how long it took for me, though YMMV) • you want mechanics that force you to actually use your brain as you do min-maxing against various use-cases that the game throws at you

Don’t get this game if: • you’re looking for an immersive wizarding RPG. The story really falls downhill after a while, and the lore feels kind of incoherent. • you want to do stuff other than fighting. Your fights are mostly automatable from the start, but that will be the main mechanic and you will be doing a lot of it. If you want a game about running a wizarding academy or something, you will be sorely disappointed.
