Bands & Bonds review
3

Played around for about 3 or 4 days and unlocked roughly 80% of the map So far it's very much a prototype - it's very raw Mechanics are interesting, and for once party management actually feels like it matters, but on the other hand it doesn't matter that much, because most characters feel somewhat useless, or they are useful, but you will have to wait a while until they actually become useful This game is one massive time wall, because it gives you a character that is supposed to speed things up Let me explain The game sometimes will have an enemy that has an attack time limit, so if your attack is slower than an arbitrary number - it won't hit at all What do you do? You get Kit Flash to speed up attack times for you, obviously, and the issue is resolved, right? Wrong, because Kit Flash takes 10 seconds to upgrade speed by one, and it does not upgrade itself So what happens most often is that you'll encounter an enemy with a time gate, or a shield gate (because your attack needs to be higher than the shield amount in order to hit, and stacking attacks is a whole other issue, very similar to the time one, only slightly better), and you will have a character in your party that can counter either the time gate with it's fast but low damage attacks, or the shield gate with slow high damage attacks Makes sense, right? Wrong, because then it will give you a character with both Exhibit A: an enemy called Chago, who has a time gate of 10 ms (that's milliseconds), and a shield gate of 25k damage (which means your character needs to hit 25k+x with one hit to do x amount of damage) Now, the easiest guy to stack damage on is Knight of Claws, who gets x2 damage increase for each empty space next to him, but that introduces a problem His attack takes 1 minute and 40 seconds to hit, without any upgrades Kit Flash can upgrade it to make it shorter His upgrade has diminishing returns, which means the longer he upgrades - the less effective it is Which means you're now stuck for a LITERAL HOUR watching absolutely nothing happening (I was lucky to just take a nap in that time), as it slowly decreases the time gate to about a 100 ms, at which point you will probably get bored and give up like I did This is a balancing nightmare, and it has no reason for existing To my opinion, both weapon level increase and attack speed increase are broken mechanics that actively make the game worse, and need to be remade entirely, because as of now they turn everything in time walls in a game that encourages only active play Just make Kit Flash speed up both smithing and itself, and instead increase gold costs each time you do it, so there is actually a reason to give out those thousands of gold to the player, because as of now - I literally went away for an hour, and in that hour working together Kit Flash and Anvilomancer used up 1k gold out of 14k I gained This is nightmarish And you could make an argument that it's an idle game and therefore it's fine, but in an idle game you're supposed to advance even if you aren't playing This ain't that Even though you have a character that can explore for you - all it accumulates is berries, which are used to unlock more provisions, so you can add more party members, and adding most higher level ones feels useless, because they do nothing helpful It cannot accumulate strength for you, since the formula for increasing your starter weapon strength is a square root of the highest ever level you got, and mine is currently 45, and it took me 2000 levels to get that number, and a 1 hour nap, and all game did is idle on one screen and pointlessly increase weapon level without advancing anywhere or giving me anything else And again, you can't stack time in the same way, so it's just pointless, because at a certain point damage is not the issue - time gates are You have to be active and present to actually play the game, but game just doesn't let you do that most of the time, making you sit and wait on those upgrades I wonder how wasn't it caught in the testing, because imbalance is obvious

Add to that the fact that all images are AI, the blur function to make them go away induces a headache, and map is basically non-functional, despite the prototype for it being made in a decent software, and it leaves you with a game that you really really want to like, but it's so undercooked that eating it right now will most likely give you only a bland taste and stomach ache

I really hope that developer sees those reviews and comments, and that those points will be taken into consideration, because the game has potential, and since it's only a prototype, it can be fixed fairly easily with some minor tweaks As of now - I do recommend to check it out for something different, but I don't recommend sticking around for longer than a day, late game is not worth it and "cheats" in options are only useful at the very start The potential is there, so will be sticking around to see where this goes nonetheless
