Dreams review
3

I wanted to like it. I really did. It's beautiful, it's unique, it's rare, and I love devs taking chances and making something diffferent. And the idea itself is not bad, but the execution has some problems.

The progress is super slow and the gameplay is very repetitive. You unlock dreams the same way over and over and over. The interaction is pretty basic and it doesn't require skill at all. At first, I thought it would unlock faster if I moved the mouse faster or require less energy, but no, me and a 5-year-old would complete the game at the same speed. I guess the only thing that would eventually define how fast you finish the game is the order of the upgrades you choose, but upfront you have no info to make an informed decision, so it's mostly random.

The UI is not intuitive. Since it's too artistic, I was confused about what was text and what was a button. For instance, the "Dream 1/3" panel, I thought it was a button. And it is, but not in the way I expected. Then clicking "discover" would close a panel, which would show a button that reads "discover," and if I click it, it opens the panel again that says "discover." This is a common mistake by devs (I make the same mistake too!) since they've tested the game so many times that things obvious to them won't be obvious to a player who knows nothing about the game. What I tend to do is go to help or to the description on itch for instructions, but there's none of that. A short description on itch of how to play the game would be nice.

Then the upgrades. I think I chose "-20% energy" for my first upgrade, and maybe a second one too, and by the time I was about to complete the first dream, it was 99% complete and I ran out of energy. It was the most frustrating part of it all. I can't be playing for 10 minutes (forgive me, but with very monotonous gameplay) without a single win. You need to give the player something to look forward to quickly. Maybe the first dream can be completed faster and the last dream a bit longer, but I stopped playing there.

As I said, I really wanted to like it. The art is amazing, but the design decisions about gameplay and progress are questionable and, I think, need to be reformulated.

Hope it helps!
